It’s all fun and games until you have to act like a human zip-tie to keep things moving.
OK, referring to running a business as “horrific” is a little overkill. Maybe it is a little more so in California, but I digress. It really isn’t that bad being a business owner. In fact, most business owners would never go back to punching into a time clock and having some suit tell them when they can eat, how long they are allowed to pee and all the rest of it. No way. I will do whatever it takes to keep my business going and growing. I love the freedom, honesty and dedication it takes.
Business owners are kinda like single parents. The good ones. Whatever that kid’s (business’s) needs are, usually and hopefully are met by the parent. If a little girl wants ribbons in her hair today, you better watch a YouTube video on how to do ribbons Dad. Son wants to bury his sister barbies up their neck and flood ’em? Get the hand-scooper, Ma.
I know several business owners who wake up early, grind all day and come home exhausted. But what do we talk about when we are not working? Our businesses. It is a labor of love. Digging, pressing in, learning, growing, loving… it’s next level life. If I don’t feel a little anxiety each day, I probably didn’t do enough to delight my clients.
I spent 5 hours today making a custom ad in three different formats that will speak to the needs of sellers in a certain area of town. I took one look at the stock ads that were available and said “nope, these folks deserve better”. If you are going to commuicate with someone, give them something substantative. You are, by the way, lucky to have their attention for a moment. Make it count and show gratitude.
